Muslim Modeling Agency

As bizzare as this headline may seem to be, as true as it really is. 28 years old Fashion Designer Nailah Lymus is launching a new agency for Muslim models called Underwraps next week during New York Fashion Week. I was a little confused with how she wants to relate the two, as religion goes against everything that the fashion Industry represents today, but with a little research I’ve come to understand what Nailah is trying to accomplish, abit controversial  yes but nevertheless ambitious .

Fashion Designer Nailah Lymus

Nailah Lymus is an American-born Muslim with a mixture of African-American, Irish, and Cherokee Native American origins. She’s a self-taught independent designer whose always had the talent for arts and ambition for fashion. Being veiled herself, she believes in the modesty that is required by her religious beliefs, which states that women’ clothes should be loose enough so as not to reveal their shape but only face, hands and feet can be visible.

Nailah aims to prove that if a model is to be Muslim, she can still be as fashionable and gorgeous while adhering to her religious beliefs of modesty.  “[Muslim models] come from a background where they dress Islamically appropriate, but to be in this industry and to be a model you kind of have to forfeit that,” Lymus said. “That’s why I wanted to start this agency, so you don’t have to do that. You don’t have to lose who you are to be in this business.”

She already adopts this idea through her work, where she creates stylish transitional designs for both Muslim and non- Muslim women, with an aim of changing the stereotyping associated with Muslim women today.“I simply want people to understand that Islam is our religion, but we are still women and we definitely love fashion so why can’t we be fashionable?!” as she explains it. “ I appreciate that my talent is a gift that God blessed me with and I know I should use it as a tool to educated myself and not get caught up in the superficiality of the industry.”

Muslim Fashion Modeling

Underwraps Modeling Agency is now representing only four models which are committed to their beliefs yet are hoping to be able to work with mainstream designers like Hanna Abdeeslam, whom is the first Muslim model that Lancome ever signs up.”“We take things seriously and are professional just like other models. During fashion week I’ll be sending them out to castings just like anyone else,” Lymus said.

I’m not quite sure how such Modeling agency would be able to survive without difficulties in such a sexually oriented  industry but you have to respect Nailah Lymus for trying to give fashion the opportunity of a new direction.

Seems Like Kristen….huh?

I’d like to think that Kristen Stewart was just caught jokingly flicking a  friend in distance in this  paparazzi shot not Karl Lagerfeld himself lol

How to Choose The Right Jeans for You…

Jeans…. the most basic yet essential piece in your wardrobe. It always seems like it’s the easiest thing to buy but as you go shopping you realize after trying on like 15 pairs of jeans that nothing fits right!  I guess the problem here is not the jeans itself, It’s actually that your shopping the trend without paying attention to what you should or shouldn’t be wearing. You have to understand we all have different body shapes, so when you’re shopping you need to buy the style that best fits you’re shape.

Apple Figure: Now women with an Apple shape figure  have more of an undefined waist because they carry more weight around their tummy, they have larger busts and broader shoulders as well. But the good thing is that most Apple’s have narrower hips and slim legs which gives them a wider selection of jeans to choose from.

Apple Shape

  • Buy jeans that have a flat front with a rise that is lower than  your natural waist  from the front, curving to a higher rise at the back for comfort ” to keep any un necessary things from showing if you get what I mean”.
  • The wider the waistband the better since thin waistband tend to dig in your tummy fat creating “muffin top” syndrome (where your “love handles” stick out of your jeans, very unattractive!)
  • Avoid button up jeans as they will add  bulk onto your tummy area.
  • Since Apple’s have flatter bums then we usually need some sort of optical illusion here, so the trick is to buy jeans with flap pockets to give it some depth and curved shape back yokes that outlines a curvy heart shape to it .
  • Well when it comes to colors go for lighter shades as it makes your thighs look  fuller which balances out the proportions of your body, other wise you’ll draw more attention to your chest and tummy.

I know we all love skinny jeans but darling they’re  just not for you because they will emphasize on your upper half of the body. You need jeans that will balance things out, so you can choose anything from straight leg jeans to flares whichever you wish,  just remember the wider the legs the better.

Pear Figure: As Egyptians you’ll find that a higher percentage of women here have pear shape figures. Women with these figures have narrow waists, smaller busts, wider hips and fuller thighs. It’s almost a nightmare to shop for jeans when it comes to this shape because to find a perfect fit for the hips they end up buying a size bigger , which leaves a gap at the back of the waist, eventually you kind yourself stuck in the dilemma of having to choose between your waist or hips.

Pear Shape

  • Lycra is your friend when it comes to jeans for curvy women, don’t buy classic rigid denim because the jeans need to flex with our bumps and not flatten them.
  • Go for wider waistbands with a medium front rise ( only a few cms below your belly button) curved to a higher back rise , they really flatter your waist.
  • Buttons or zips on jeans’ front need to be  minimal, avoid any bulky side pockets or side button detail.
  • Don’t buy jeans with small back pockets, they can make your bum look bigger even worse if there is any details on the pocket such as beading or embroidery. Instead go for medium-sized pockets that angle slightly toward the center and are placed a bit higher than mid bum level to help make it look sexier. Another thing make sure the back yoke line is wide and slightly triangular because it’ll make your waist appear wider also it prevents gaping and hugs the lower back a lot better.
  • Always go for dark shapes because trust me they do give more of a slimming effect. That does not mean you can buy dark jeans with fading  around the upper leg because we don’t want any focus on that upper leg area. But if you do like that effect buy dark jeans with fading below the knee. it can also work well for you besides it elongates the legs.

The shape and cut of the jeans golden rule here is to stick to cuts that hug your hips but have volume in the leg to even out your curves. Boot cut jeans is your best choice,  the widening of the leg below the knee will help balance out the wide hips and thighs, as the added width to the lower part of you leg will make them look smaller. Straight leg jeans could look good as well depending on the size of your hips, depending on your hip size. I’d recommend you wear them with higher heels as this will lengthen your look and make your hips look smaller.

If you really want to invest in that perfect jeans then I would definitely recommend you buy True religion, they have amazing fits for curvy women but a bit costy though.

Hour Glass Figure: Aka the Coca-cola bottle shape as guys like to call it here, probably the most envied of all the shapes. Women with hour glass figures are round and curvy, with a well-defined waistline, fuller hips and bust and generous thighs. Buying the right pair of jeans shouldn’t be much of problem because their body proportions are naturally evened out but you still need to keep some points in mind while shopping.

Hour Glass Shape

  • you should ideally wear jeans that have a smaller cut mid rise waist, this will help you achieve that beautifully fitted look from  waist to hips.
  • With fitting in mind, stretch denim jeans can be the perfect choice and will give you movement and comfort for your shapely figure.
  • Avoid establishments on back pockets and try to keep it to the minimal.
  • Like pear shape you should go for dark colors without the wash out effect around the upper legs because we don’t want those hips or thighs area to look any bigger then you’ll lose that balance you have. But
To balance out your hips choose jeans that have a slightly flared, wide leg or boot cut. You can wear skinny jeans but preferably with high heels to elongate your legs.

Rectangular Figure: Some women tend to have more of a boyish figure with an undefined waist, narrower hips, and small bust. You can still work with your body frame and make it look sexy, you just need to be careful with what you’re wearing. I think the only trick here to create those curves is making the waist look smaller and the hips wider.

Rectangular Shape

  • Low rise jeans with wide waistbands (preferable of thicker material) that fall on the fullest part of your hips will add a few centimeters to your waist. Besides, they break up the vertical line of your body helping you balancing out the length of your torso by taking away some of the length from your legs.
  • Bleaching or fading effects on the thighs and bum can add contour and help create the illusion of curves.
  •  Luckily for you, you’ve been blessed with a frame that can get away with wearing any colour of jeans so enjoy it .
  • Create some curves in your bum by choosing styles with flap pockets and decorative detailing on the it.

Skinny jeans that tightly fit and jeggings are like your body shapes best friends, they enhance your hips making them look curvier and make your legs look longer and slimmer which any other body shape would kill to have. If you want more of a shape then find yourself a fit’n flare jeans, than can bring out your bum and thighs and also adds volume to your legs. Whatever you do stay away from boyfriend cuts or baggy jeans they only emphasize your square figure.

So to wrap things up, when buying  jeans don’t buy a size smaller in order to feel better trust me a muffin top is not a great look. Always be careful of the details at the back, where the , both placement and size of the pockets have great effect on how well your bum will look. Notice the back yoke and choose the one that makes your jeans have a better fit without gaping. Fading effects does affect the shape of your legs so be careful when buying because you need to know what you need to emphasize and what you don’t.

Hope these tips were helpful enough for you.

Look like a Cover Girl!!!

hahahaha it’s that easy!

Enough with the Evil Eye!

What I’m about to post is a personal request to all the Egyptian Designers out there. I think I speak for my self and many others when I say ENOUGH with the “Evil Eye/khamsa we khemesa hand or whatever you call it/Arabic Calligraphy” Combined ethnic fashion statement you’re trying to make, please. It’s already been established with great designers such as Azza Fahmy and Amina K. but I couldn’t help but notice that a lot of designers (not all of them) these days  building a whole collection based the same exact influence over and over and over again. To the point that I could match that same print I’m wearing with my handbag, jewelry, curtains and probably my furniture. I’m not saying be more westernized so that you would be acceptable im saying you are designers for god’s sake so innovate!

I believe designers of the Middle Eastern region have the best of both worlds seriously, You have the great history, art, literature, & culture of the Arab world and you have great designers and inspirations flowing in everyday from the western world, if you could only make use of both then the sky is the limit for you. It just doesn’t make sense to me when a designer takes a western silhouette and decorates it with  some evil eye and ethnic touches just to make it look more easternized. Why don’t you just come up with your own silhouettes, even if it wont be acceptable at first, it’s a piece of art that should be timeless and speaks of your talent, come on look at the likes of McQueen, If he was living here we’d probably have locked him up in a mental hospital a long time ago.

Seriously open your wardrobe and look how many pieces that you own and actually have bought from a high street retail store have Arabic influence to it, just as an example the harem pants or even the Palestinian scarf.  Honestly I myself am fond of the Moroccan history and traditional wear  and havent seen many people here pay any attention to it so why not?! And you now what it doesn’t have to be of any influence, why can’t its be the result of pure insanity or talent.

Just regardless of whatever you choose to draw your inspiration from just make sure that it defines you as a designer and an artist. I beg you please look around you, away from the catwalks, away from the big retail stores, or what trends people are buying these days….and create something new, elevate the Egyptian fashion scene.  Whatever you do ENOUGH WITH THE EVIL EYE!

Fun Summer Sunglasses Trends!!

Trendy Summer Shades

To be honest this is the most exciting thing about the fashion season this summer, the catwalks were just full of vibrant and gorgeous accessories as well as sunglasses that you just can’t wait to get your hands on. Designers where thoughtful enough to give us a wide variety of sunglasses to choose from this time around, some are really extravagant and stylish while others are more traditional and even classic….. so lets break them down for you.

Cat-Eyes Sunglasses Let me start with my ultimate favorite shape this summer…. the Cat-Eyes Sunglasses. They have been sighted pretty frequently in the catwalk, I just find them so chic & glamorous,  makes you feel like a movie star from the 50′s just finish the look with a silk scarf tied around your hair and your good to go. Not to mention that this shape works on nearly everyone’s face making a strong fashion statement. You’ll be able to find these  in varying degrees of “cattiness” from the extreme at Proenza to the refined at Prada.

Cat-Eyes Sunglasses

Round Sunglasses We have to thank Lady GaGa and Elton John for those, although I’m not very fond of round sunglasses but this classic shape has been renovated by designers designing its frames and lens in different hues, as well as frames with patterns or jewel-encrusting, which roots this trend in the fashion scene this year. One tip though, round shape Sunglasses are not good for anyone who has a curvy or round face.

Round Sunglasses

Playful Sunglasses  Some might think you’re a fashion victim some might think your mentally challenged to be wearing such sunglasses but what the hell, fashion is meant to be fun after all. Marc Jacobs launched these cutie pie heart embellished glares while Carerra was as playful and vibrant as ever, designing fun sunglasses with bold neon colors. So challenge yourself  and get a pair of heart, oval and  or even diamond-shaped shades that will make you feel …..lets say unique, after all it’s  a perfect choice for girls who aren’t afraid to attract attention.

Playful Sunglasses

Sporty Sunglasses Sportswear inspired pieces has been one of the major trends shown on the catwalks this season, it’s not about practicality anymore its more about style,so why not have sunglasses that complements your outfit.

Sporty Sunglasses

Gradient Sunglasses Well we’ve been seeing this trend come and go from the fashion scene but it never gets old. This trend is making a strong comeback this season with a variety of shaped frames.

Gradient Lens Sunglasses

Contract Sunglasses So if you’re not much into colour blocking and feel better if both the lens and the frame has a bit of contrast then these are the perfect sunglasses for you.

Contract Sunglasses

There’s alot more variety out there for you and you’ll even find some shades that just don’t look anything you’ve ever seen before, to be honest my favourite pick of this summer would be those Edgy Sunglasses from Fendi.

Love It!!

So find the  Sunglasses that best suits your shape of  face, style and always look fashion-forward!
